There are songs in all genres that can have certain themes that can have a negative effect on youth. Some of these themes are sexual references and violence. Some songs make it seem like everybody should be having sex or that all people should have a “sexy” body image. It was reported in the "Pittsburgh Post-Gazette," that many young women who watch music videos the exhibit strong sexuality do not believe that they can be successful without using their bodies. Songs that portray violence can send the message that it is okay to be violent and to hurt other people. When an artist writes song like this they can be just telling stories but some listeners may think it is all true and that being violent like this artist will make them more popular.
So the youth listening to songs that have these characteristics may try to change to feel better about themselves and to do things that they hope will make other people like them, Young girls may think they have to dress more risqué or to be more promiscuous to make friends or to attract a man. The people who are listening to these songs that include violence may grow up thinking that violence is always the answer and that to fit it they must act tough.
As well as some music putting ideas like these in kid’s heads, it can also just be a distraction. Some people find that they spend all of their time listening to music or playing music and they end up neglecting things in their life. To a young person the things they neglect may seem so small like homework or chores, but as they get older the things they forget can become more important and have a bigger impact in their lives. Forgetting a homework assignment here or there can develop into getting bad grades and not doing well in school.
I am around younger kids all day, from the age of five and younger, and you can tell how just the tone of music can change their whole attitude. Playing fast and upbeat music can put the kids in a feisty mood where they will just run around and be crazy. Where as if you play soft and slow music is can help to relax them and even help them sleep. I think this shows how music can trigger responses in your brain that make you act a certain way. So if a song is sending bad messages or setting an aggressive tone without thinking about it people can be influenced by it.
I agree that some are easily influenced by the music they listen to and it is crazy that some kids will go so far to act like their favorite artists. Some change their appearance completely or the way they act or talk. There is so much sex and violence now in music and it is hard for parents to track what their kids listen to because a lot of it is not good but parents don't know that this is out there.I have two daughters and I fear that they will one day want to follow these artists or be like the girls in their videos. I hope music does not influence my kids in a bad way as they get older and are more able to listen to what the lyrics in music are saying. That is crazy about woman who watch music videos. Another reason that I fear for my girls growing up. In a way I feel bad that some people are so insecure or unsure about themselves that they have to mold themselves into what music videos or t.v. has put out there about who a woman should look or act. I hope when my girls grow older, they will know themselves and not have to be influenced by music in a bad way.
ReplyDeleteI love listening to music I think that it calms me down and allows me to just relax when I’m stressed because you don’t have to think when you listen o it, but I am amazed how it can affect kids. Younger generations are hearing and listening to more and more violent and aggressive or sexual music than I remember listening to when I was younger, and I don’t think that they are mature enough to sort out truth from everything else. I think that sometimes it’s too much for them to handle and they begin acting out on either what they are listening to or what they “think” they are listening to. Most of the kids I have noticed don’t really even understand or know what it is they are actually listening to. But I think that kids that are unsure of themselves are much more easily influenced by just about anything and so music is just one of the many things they look to. Something that truly bugs me though, I understand sex sells and people listen but I don’t understand why jut about everything now a days has to have sex in it. Every song, every movie, every TV show it just amazes me that we as a society are allowing everything to be so degrading.
